I recently got my haircut at a nameless salon in Chinatown. After getting off the subway at Grand street, which is a traumatizing experience in it’s own right, I walked past fish markets and Vietnamese restaurants to a tiny, hole-in-the-wall hair salon. The salon, which was recommended by a fellow fashion editor, was actually more of a barbershop. I’m not sure the last time the floors had been swept and I suspect they washed my hair with hard soap. Summertime in New York can be a dangerous time for your skin. It's hot, humid, and muggy all the time. You are essentially walking around in a steambath all day. And that's just the weather. On top of it, Summer is the most social time of year. Everyone is getting off work early during the week and then jetting to the Hamptons on the weekend. You could hypothetically have a Thursday night that innocently starts out at the Young Wall Street benefit at 8pm, move to your friend Greg’s apartment where you drink a coffee cup full of vodka and cranberry juice, then jump to Schillers on the Lo ...

My roommate Vivian has tried just about every deodorant out there. Her skin is so sensitive that the drugstore brands are too irritating but the natural deodorants don’t get the job done. Eventually she stumbled upon Nivea’s deodorant and has never looked back. It is the optimal combination of reliable antiperspirant protection but in a mild formula, and because it is alcohol and colorant free your skin never gets irritated. One of my goals in life is to create a list of the best things: products, clothes, condiments, etc. So far I have three things on my list: the best tank-top for layering: C & C’s bold tank, the best ballet flat: Bloch London, and the best under-eye concealer: Bobbi Brown’s Corrector. Bobbi Brown’s Corrector for extra dark circles makes you look like you just finished a 10-day juice fast. As soon as I put it on I appear well-slept (which I never am) and as if I haven’t had a sip of alcohol in my life (and we all know that isn’t true). In other words, it’ ...
